Google Slides: A Definitive Guide

To work effectively with presentations, you should decide on such concepts as a template and a slide layout, as well as a theme.

A theme is a collection of templates and slide layouts. It determines the appearance of the presentation, regardless of its content.

The template includes elements common to all slides. This can be a specific background, font type, graphic elements (for example, a company logo), etc. You can also use readymade amazing google slide free templates.

Layout determines the location of blocks of information on the slide. The layout is a kind of cliché that will create a specific frame. To better understand what a layout is, let’s look at the names of the available layouts: “Title Slide”, “Title and Text”, “Title and Two Columns”, “Signature”, etc. The user can add their own options layouts.

The meaning of these definitions will become completely clear to you in the process of working with presentations.

How to change the theme of Google Presentation

A new presentation is created with the theme “Simple Light”. Her name is fully justified. Slides have a white background, and the titles and test are decorated in simple black font. Such a presentation is unlikely to attract attention. We need something brighter.

  1. You can change the subject in two ways.
  2. Choose one of the options offered by the service:
  3. Go to the menu “Slide” and select “Change theme …”.
  4. A window will open in which you need to specify which appearance we want to deliver to the presentations.
  5. Press the “OK” button.

All slides of the open presentation will take on a new look in accordance with the chosen theme. It is necessary to take into account the fact that after changing the design, the contents of some elements on the slides can go beyond their borders. This is due to the change in the size of the fonts used.

Perhaps, the suggested themes will be enough for you, but, in my opinion, it is better to use another option – import of themes. You take design from the finished presentation and “flick of the wrist,” give your work a beautiful look.

How to do it?

  1. Go to the menu “Slide” and select “Change theme …”.
  2. A window will open in which you need to click the “Import Theme” button.
  3. The service will offer to specify Google Presentations on Google Drive or select a file in PPT or PPTX format. The size of external files (PPT, PPTX) should not exceed 50MB . Otherwise, the system will generate an error.
  4. In the next step, you once again need to specify the presentation from which the topic will be taken, and click the “Import topic” button.

Compare what we had and what became.

The difference is obvious.

How to change slide template

Suppose we want to change the design of all the slides at once. For this you need to change the template.

  1. Go to the menu “Slide” – “Change Template”.
  2. On the left, select the “Template” thumbnail.
  3. Change the background, font size, etc. If you want to add text that will be present on all slides, in the “Insert” menu, select “Text Field”, enter text and specify its location so that it does not interfere with the main content.
  4. No additional actions are needed to fix the result. Simply close the window using the “cross” in the upper right corner.

How to add your slide layout

GoogleDocs offers a set of the most common slide types: Title Slide, Title and Text, Title and Signature, etc. As a rule, this is enough. But if you often use some kind of original arrangement of information in a frame, create a layout for it.

  1. Go to the menu “Slide” – “Change Template”.
  2. Highlight the layout after which you want to add a new one.
  3. Click the “New Layout” button (“+” button) at the top left.
  4. A new blank for the slide will appear at the location you specify. Go to it and make the necessary settings. To add a new information item, select Insert Label in the Insert menu.
  5. There can be only one element on the slide with the “Headline filler” and “Subtitle filler” type and an unlimited number of “Main text filler” elements.
  6. You can add images, text, shapes and they will always be present on slides built on this layout.
  7. Give the layout a friendly name. To do this, use the “Rename” button in the upper right.
  8. Close the configuration window.

Layouts can be deleted, copied and pasted like any other objects.

If you need to rearrange the layout above or below its current position, use the “Cut” and “Paste” commands.

Now you can imagine how the theme, template and layout are related to each other. And you will clearly understand what happens when you add a new slide of one kind or another. And having adjusted the design, you will immediately see how your presentation will look.
